Wayne State Football returns after a bye week last week, and they look to refuel and reoperate after a struggling first half of the season. The team has a 3-4 record this season and is third in the south division and eighth overall in the NSIC standings.
After the bye week, Head Coach Logan Masters looks to refocus for this matchup against Minnesota State.
“Keep playing better,” Coach Masters said. “I don’t think we necessarily played badly. Unfortunately, we’ve just turned the ball over a bunch. and that’s hard. Like, last Saturday, the defense got a turnover, and we turned it over to them the very next play, which is just momentum killer, morale killer, and we got to stop doing that in our four losses. We have turned it over 12 times. So, I think, it sounds crazy sitting here at 3-4. We haven’t played terrible. We just haven’t been very disciplined with the football and too many penalties”.
In last season’s game against Minnesota State, the Wildcats lost 35-28 from a Karson Dunn interception late in the fourth quarter. Before kickoff, Maverick players were seen wearing black shirts with “Beat Wayne” on the front.
Masters also described what the energy is like in the locker room, heading into this matchup.
“Great energy, great focus. Practice has been a little bit lighter, so it’s been a little bit easier on them, but they’re engaged; they’re working to get better, old, young, and you only get 11 opportunities playing football. I think they realize that, and they’re making the most of it. So, I think it’s been good and the mindset is right. Just got to go out and play a little better than we have in the last couple weeks,” Masters said.
Senior captain and center Will Washenberger expressed what message he plans to send for the game this Saturday.
“The message I want to send is that we’re still competitive. You know, we might have four losses this season, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to roll over every game we have. It’s kind of at the point where we’re trying to ruin other people’s seasons now,” Washenberger said.
