It has recently been revealed that Puerto Rican rapper and singer Bad Bunny will be performing at the Superbowl LX half-time show.
Bad Bunny began his career in 2016 through multiple hit songs, allowing him to collaborate with big names like Drake, and Cardi B.
His songs are almost completely in Spanish, but despite the English-barrier, he remains one of the top artists on Spotify, with over 100 billion streams in total.
Even though Bad Bunny has been a popular artist for multiple years, when the Superbowl Halftime show announcement revealed him to be performing, it became what is likely the most controversial halftime show pick in all Super Bowl history.
The songs that he will perform for the halftime show are almost guaranteed to be entirely in Spanish, a risky move for the NFL considering its main target demographic are diehard sports fans who might skip over the show because of the language barrier.
Ever since Donald Trump re-gained his spot in the White House office after the 2024 election, he has begun to crack down on cities and areas populated with mostly Latinos. According to the official Homeland Security website, since September 23rd they have estimated that more than 2 million undocumented immigrants have been removed from the U.S. in under 250 days.
The half-time announcement was also an interesting move from Bad Bunny’s part. Knowing about the current ICE raids, he decided to cancel all his performances during his 2025 tour in order to, in his words, protect fans from ICE who “could be outside my concert.”
The Halftime show has become culturally significant recently, with the last performance featuring Kendrick Lamar and his usage of symbolism to spread awareness of racial inequality.
While Bad Bunny has plans and ideas for his performance, this announcement comes at a weird point in history where a Latin-American artist will perform on America’s biggest stage as ICE raids and anti-immigrant statements are promoted through the current administration.
U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem has commented that ICE will be “all over” the Superbowl during the halftime show, attempting to enforce the law as they find it to be a potential hotspot for illegals.
Many suggest that Bad Bunny might make a statement about the current raids and deportations while on stage, but it’s difficult to know what will happen until he begins his performance on air.
He has not been silent, however, as during an appearance on Saturday Night Live, he opened the show poking fun at the backlash he received from right-wing media. He spoke in Spanish for a chunk of his monolog, before stating, “If you didn’t understand what I said, you have 4 months to learn.”
Despite the entire country now focused on him, Bad Bunny has set the stage for what could be one of the more interesting halftime performances in recent history. It’s up to him whether he wants to show love to Puerto Rico or protest the struggle Latino communities are facing at this current moment.
