The Green Team, open to all Wayne State College students, is a team that is dedicated to making a difference not only on campus but also in the community.
“The Green Team is a club of students from across campus who care about the environment,” Laura Dendinger, advisor for the Green Team, said. “Students gather to support one another in making a difference.”
“The WSC Green Team is an organization that promotes environmental awareness and recycling,” Xavier Peardon, president of the Green Team, said. “It started because like-minded students a decade ago decided the Wayne State campus and the world could benefit from being more environmentally friendly.”
Peardon said it hasn’t always been easy being president of the team, but that he is always learning, and he is there to serve and help the community.
“It hasn’t been all smooth sailing being the president of the WSC Green Team because I am learning the ropes as I go, but it is definitely worth seeing both my own and other efforts serve to benefit our community and planet,” Peardon said.
Addie Stirek, a new member of the Green Team and a sophomore majoring in chemistry and minoring in biology says she joined the team because she wanted to help the community in some way.
“I only recently joined the Green Team this semester,” Stirek said. “I joined the Green Team because I was looking for another club to join especially something service related or that would be beneficial to the community.”
Ian Mccarty, secretary of the Green Team, also just joined this year and said he feels like the team is making a difference.
“I think this team means a lot because it allows students as well as myself to get out there and really feel like we are making a difference,” Mccarty said.
The Green Team comes up with all sorts of projects to make the campus more environmentally friendly. Dendinger and Peardon mention how they will be working on some bigger projects this semester.
“The Green Team is going to plant some trees on campus this semester,” Dendinger said. “We will also host a thrift shop, and we will work to reduce the items that people would throw away at the end of the semester.”
The Green Team will also be working on some bigger projects this semester.
“This semester, we are focusing on large scale recycling projects such as our Donate Don’t Dump campaign and Thrift Swap,” Peardon said.
The team meets in the lower level of the Kanter Student Center every other Tuesday at 5 p.m. For more details, students can follow their Instagram and Facebook page.
