Wayne State College’s radio station, KWSC-FM, celebrated World College Radio Day on Friday, October 3 with a broadcast at Hoffbauer Plaza outside the student center.
World College Radio Day (WCRD) is exactly how it sounds. It’s a day to celebrate college radio stations all over the world. Every year they hold an international broadcast, where college stations around the world get one hour of time where their segment isbroadcasted globally. KWSC-FM was one of the selected stations and broadcasted at 11 a.m.
Following that, KWSC-FM moved to Hoffbauer Plaza outside the student center at noon to do their hour-long local remote broadcast.KWSC_FM talked sports, highlighted some of their specialty shows, like “Culture Shock”, “The Breakfast Jam” and “T-Bone’s Transmission,” and what being on the radio means to them.
Junior general manager of KWSC-FM, Tori Olguin, aka, DJ T-Bone, was one of the main personalities on the broadcast.
“It honestly means a lot to me,” Olguin said. “This radio station and being part of it has given me so many opportunities to be creative and come up with more activities and stuff to do.”
Olguin has her own segment, called “T-Bone’s Transmission” all about NASCAR. Olguin premieres the show first on KWSC-FM, then puts it on Spotify.
Katryst Chari also did a bit during the WCRD broadcast. She runs “Culture Shock,” where she brings people from outside or around the Wayne area and talks about something that surprised them most about Wayne and WSC.
“Some of my favorite memories are driving to school with my dad, because we would always play the same three radio stations,” Chari said. “When it comes to World College Radio Day, it’s kind of that thing of pride in such a small station. In my head, it’s just a college station, but the fact that there’s a whole day dedicated to the work and efforts students put into their stations.”
Olguin said why she’s doing radio, “It was part of my major, so I was required to take it my freshman year, but then when I took radio workshop and met the people I met; they encouraged me to stay with the station, and do my own things, like bring my creativity to life.”
KWSC-FM will have many more special broadcasts this semester, like the annual International Clash Day, Dead Rockstars, etc. Contact Sean Ahern at [email protected] for questions about KWSC-FM.
