Wayne State College women’s soccer team won their game on Friday, Oct. 3 against Concordia–St. Paul.
This came after a series of four wins and three ties for the team over the past month. The Friday game started slow with one goal scored by Concordia–St. Paul and none by WSC.
After the conclusion of their first 45 minutes of game play, the teams each took their halftime break to regroup. The Golden Bears remained up by one point until roughly halfway through the second half of the game, when Alyssa Ferin scored a goal.
This made the teams tied at 1–1. Soon thereafter, Concordia–St. Paul scored once again, leaving the Wildcats down by a point. With five minutes left of the game, it seemed this was going to be Wayne State’s first loss of their season.
That was until Morgan Mancuso scored a goal with three minutes left on the clock. With no additional points scored in the game, and no overtime in regular season soccer games, the Wayne State Wildcats tied 2–2 with the Concordia–St. Paul Golden Bears.
“To be able to pull out a tie in the last three minutes of the game reflects just how hard we work every day and how determined we are to keep our heads up when things aren’t going our way on the field,” Reagan Allen, forward and senior soccer player, said.
The team gained their wins through hard work, practicing four times a week and having scheduled games each Friday and Sunday.
The teams’ first loss of their season came only two days after the match against Concordia–St. Paul. WSC lost 1–2 on Sunday, Oct. 5 in their game against Winona State University.
This was a tough game for the team to lose, as it was Wayne State’s senior night. The seniors were given framed jerseys with their number after the game and many families showed up to watch.
“This year has been so special, and I’ve really been trying to soak in every moment considering it’s the last season I’ll ever play soccer,” Allen said. “My family has been at every game, and the soccer team has gotten the most support from the community this season than any other year I’ve been on the team.”
According to the college’s website, the Wildcats are scheduled to play nine more conference matches, three of which will be hosted at the WSC soccer complex.
