A fall college career and internship fair will be held on Oct. 8 at 11:30 a.m. in the Kanter Student Center.
The career fair is for students looking to build connections and set up post-graduate opportunities in their desired work fields. It was coordinated by Molly Garnder, the cooperative education and career services coordinator, and Tracy Lungrin, Director of Workforce and Career Services. Both said preparation is key for students who want to make the most of the event.
“Our faculty is really good about bringing us in to hold résumé development workshops ahead of time,” Gardner said. “Many professors even assign students to create résumés, so they’re prepared for the fair.”
Lungrin said that Career Services also provides tools to help students plan strategically.
“This is our third year creating a digital career map,” Lungrin said. “It includes every company attending, their websites, short descriptions and the industries they hire for. That helps students decide who to talk to and how to prioritize their time.”
Lungrin said the main goal of the event is connecting students with employers.
“We want to connect employers who need talent with students seeking opportunities,” Lungrin said. “Even if students think no one is hiring for their major, that’s never true. Come practice your introduction, meet people and build those skills.”
We hear so many stories from students who had no idea an employer offered something related to their interests until they talked with them,” Lungrin said.
Lungrin said Career Services plans to expand opportunities for students in fields where employers don’t typically attend career fairs.
“Next spring, we’ll start hosting smaller networking events for majors like art, media, and design,” Lungrin said. “Those employers might not need to hire at a fair, but students still need to make connections. We want to help make that happen.”
The Fall Career and Internship Fair is one of Wayne State’s biggest opportunities for students to meet employers face-to-face and take the next step toward their careers.
