Volleynighter took place behind The Jug on their four sand volleyball courts on Thursday, Sept. 25, at 9 p.m.
All teams had to check-in at 8:30 p.m., and the event lasted until 6 a.m. This even brought the community of Wayne together because not only students but also the public could participate, drawing players from all over Wayne.
“The Volleynighter experience was fun and a great time,” Courtney Carlstrom, a Wayne State College freshman, said. “It was so fun to play one of my favorite sports with some of my new friends on campus.”
While Carlstrom talked highly of the event for running smoothly, she did say the wait time was the biggest downfall of the night.
“We waited almost an hour between every game,” Carlstrom said. “Having the food trucks, snacks, and side games really made it a fun experience to keep us busy while waiting.”
Carlstrom also suggested that it would be helpful if they could add more sand volleyball courts behind The Jug, so more teams could play at once.
Elly Steinhauser, another WSC freshman, talked about both the competitive and social part of the night.
“We got to Volleynighter around 8:30 p.m. and my team and I were fired up to win the whole tournament,” Steinhauser said. “Fun fact, I actually didn’t know all of my teammates, but we ended up having a great time and playing very well together.”
Steinhauser’s team faced an initial loss, but they were not going to let that stop them from the other games.
“I would say my favorite thing of the night was being active with all my friends and meeting new people,” Steinhauser said. We finally lost and went to bed around 3:30 a.m., by the way.”
While people were not playing they could enjoy the side games like Spikeball and cornhole. They also had food trucks there handing out street tacos and hot chocolate.
This event was more than just a volleyball tournament. It brought the community of Wayne together as people could play volleyball, check out the side games, and enjoy the food all in one place.
