Wayne State College football went on the road this past Saturday where they picked up a key conference win over MSU Moorhead 27–17.
Coming into this matchup, the Wildcats were 1–2 and 1–1 in NSIC play, while the Dragons were undefeated at 3–0 and 2–0 in NSIC play.
Wayne State’s defense had been the main reason as to why the Wildcats kept things close in its previous weeks. Holding teams to 20.3ppg, and 352.3 total yards of offense per game.
WSC would need the defense to show out once again against a striking offense in MSU Moorhead. Moorhead was averaging 46.6ppg, and 417 total yards of offense in each of their first three games.
WSC showed they were up for the challenge against Moorhead, holding them to 17 points and 288 total yards. WSC also picked up two interceptions by way of Clyde Hinton and Mitchell Andersen.
The Wildcats added more distress to the Dragons offense by racking up seven sacks as well. Jes Krcil, Kaden Sutton, and Hinton all recorded 1.5 sacks each. James Frank and Carter Sitzman picked up a sack a piece as well, while Kaden Johnson recorded half a sack.
WSC junior running back Dawson Forgy had himself a staggering performance in the backfield. He recorded 223 total yards rushing including two touchdown runs to cap things off.
WSC sophomore quarterback Bennett Dannenbring saw himself improve with a 16/26 107 yard passing stat line and also recording a touchdown.
Junior tight end Dane Petersen was on the receiving end of Dannenbring’s sole touchdown. Petersen had five receptions for 46 yards on the afternoon as well.
The Wildcats‘ junior kicker Boston Hensley also made his mark on the field, going 2/2 on field goals from 34 and 26 yards. He racked up nine total points after drilling all three PAT’s.
With Forgy’s great performance this past week he saw himself earn NSIC Offensive Player of the Week in week 4. Hensley also earned NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week. Hinton was a name considered in week 4 of NSIC Defensive Player of the Week.
