On Saturday Sept.13, the Wayne State College Women’s Rugby team was able to take a very commanding lead over the SMSU Mustangs which then lead to a very dominant win for the Wildcats.
The match started off on a steady route, but WSC was able to take charge. The taste of victory slipped away for the Mustangs before the second half began. The Wildcats defeated the Mustangs 62–10.
“Watching the vets do their thing really showed me how much this team cares,” Valer Quintana, a sophomore said, “When they start the game like that, it makes the rest of it flow smooth for the rest of us.”
WSC women’s rugby has a very steady track record of success. Every season for the past couple of years has been a winning season, and they have even appeared at the national level to compete as well.
With a starting lineup of veterans, and a very hefty lead at the half, the Wildcats were able to allow a couple players to come off the bench like they did the game before.
“I think having such a strong starting squad like that is really beneficial for everyone on the team,” Quintana said, “Us newer girls get a chance to go in and play and learn too.”
A rugby match lasts 80 minutes and is divided into two halves with a break in between, making it very important to get new faces switched into the game.
The women’s rugby team prides itself on taking women who either haven’t played much rugby or have never played at all and being able to make them into players good enough so that they can have these dominant wins and winning seasons.
“Just a couple weeks ago was the first time I ever played, and I can easily say that this kind of environment has made me want to win and keep these winning streaks,” Quintana said.
The Wildcats will face their next opponent, Winona State University, in Wayne on Saturday Sept. 20, 2025.
