The makeshift holiday 4/20 is coming up soon, and this year, it’s on the same day as Easter.
The last time these two days aligned was 11 years ago in 2014, and according to the U.S. Census Bureau, it won’t happen again until 2087. It’s become a popular trend on the internet to make jokes about the disparity between the two holidays, and many people think the fact that they share a date this year is novel and funny.
The local smoke shops in Wayne are still expecting plenty of business in the days leading up to April 20. Even with the major religious holiday at the same time, there are many considerations from the business side for local smoke shops.
Jeremy Sadofsky, the owner of The Hippie Chicken smoke shop in Wayne, said it was a tough decision whether or not they should stay open on the day. Ultimately, the shop decided to stay open.
“It is a really difficult decision to make, being a holiday,” Sadofsky said. “Being open on 4/20 was never really a major concern because we were going to sell a lot of stuff leading up to it anyways.”
Smoking responsibly is important all year round, but there are lots of things to keep in mind for anyone who plans to take part in the celebration this year. It is very important not to drive while under the influence. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, marijuana can slow reaction time, impair depth perception and decrease coordination, which are all very important skills while driving. Anyone planning on celebrating 420 this year should stay at home and make sure not to drive until they can do so safely.
