Wayne State College is participating in its fifth annual Giving Day on April 11. Every dollar given to the college goes towards funding for scholarships. Giving Day is a fundraising campaign designed to rally a large mass of supporters within 24 hours. This gives new and existing donors the chance to support what they wish, whether that would be academic success, athletic excellence or a variety of departments.
For the last five years, Giving Day has opened doors for students in athletics and those who have succeeded academically. Unlike Phonathon, Giving Day is entirely online, providing younger alumni an opportunity to donate any amount. Megan Finn, director for athletic development and assistant athletic director, has been assisting with this event every year. This year, she is carrying her heaviest load yet in preparing for the day.
“If a student is unable to travel to a conference, they can use these funds from the student emergency fund,” Finn said.
She said all donations made to the athletics departments or teamsgo to the students.
Since Giving Day’s creation four years ago, all athletic programs have seen success with ample donations. The first year, Giving Day raised $30,000. Ever since then, annual donation counts have gone up substantially. Last year, the goal was $125,000, and raised a total of $155,000. This year, Finn is hoping the trend continues to keep going beyond last year’s total. Phonathon raised $200,000 last year, and seems to be a bit more popular for donations between the two, but all donations are still appreciated.
This year, Scooter’s is doing a promotion on Friday, April 11, where 25% percent of profits goes to athletics. If you would like to donate, visit wsc.edu/giving-day to give to any program that you desire whether it would be for football, softball or a specific academic program.
