In 1987, after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, March officially became a month to recognize all women for their hard work and all women who paved the way for women today.
Many women on the Wayne State campus have personal inspirations. Many of the responses held so much power, and they were also very similar.
“I think someone that inspires me and that I look up to is my mom,” Angelica Zarate, a student at WSC, said. “The way she is able to work through adversity every single day is really admirable.”
While talking to students, many of the responses for who inspires them were the women in their family and their family bond.
“My sister is one of my biggest inspirations,” Carmen Castillo, a student at WSC, said. “The way she loves her kids and our family is something I look up to every single day.”
Talking to even more students, many of the answers that revolved around specific historical figures like Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Ginsburg is best known for her fight against gender discrimination, and she also served as associate justice for the Supreme Court.
“I think that a woman who really inspires me is Ruth Bader Ginsburg,” Gizelle Alarcon, a student at WSC, said. “The way she stood up for all women in America just so that we could have equal rights is something I am extremely grateful for.”
Ginsburg was not the only historical figure that was brought up. Another woman who was brought up on multiple occasions was Caitlin Clark. Clark, alongside other female athletes, has been drawing a lot more attention to female athletes in the last couple of years.
“I just feel like the way Caitlin was able to inspire not only me, but so many young girls and teach us that women’s sports can be just as enjoyable as men’s sports is so amazing,” Valery Quintana, a student at WSC, said.
During these last few weeks of Women’s History Month, it is very important that we all take the time to recognize and appreciate all the hard work the women around us and before us have done to make this world a better place.
