Wayne State students gathered in the Niobrara room of the student center on Feb. 3 to receive haircuts and hair accessories during a hair care event.
WSC CatPAC hosted a hair care event geared towards people of color on Monday evening, where students received free haircuts and spoke with other students about hair care. According to the CatPAC Instagram, the event was meant to celebrate the beauty, texture and culture that comes along with every strand of hair.
“People of color have a much harder time learning hair care techniques due to limited resources in the area,” Erin Zulkoski, a WSC senior, said. “It’s amazing they are giving out not only tools, but materials to help people take care of their hair.”
People who attended the event had the opportunity to make a hair oil that was either meant for hair growth or help decrease itchy and dry scalps. Instructions were provided along with the hair oil so students know how to get the highest benefits out of the serum.
Students who wanted to receive haircuts were required to sign up prior to the event, as there was limited availability. A hair stylist from New Era Barbershop and Salon in Columbus was on campus to give haircuts.
CatPAC also gave out several items at this event. There was a selection of CatPAC merch that students could grab on their way in, including headphones, reusable coffee cups and stickers that have a schedule of CatPAC events for the spring semester.
Hair care related items came in a goody bag that each student attending the event was given. These items included a silk pillowcase, a silk hair bonnet, the optional hair oil, silicone brush to rub the oil into the scalp, a small two-sided brush for styling and two clips used for keeping hair away from the face.
According to the Wayne State College website, 24% of students are students of color and international students, this event is just one opportunity for those students to meet one another while also learning hair care tips.
