The Wayne State College volleyball team is entering the home stretch for the 2024 season.
The Wildcats are currently 19-5 and 11-3 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. They currently are third place in the NSIC standings, and if they hold that spot, WSC is coming off a loss to Concordia St-Paul last Saturday three sets to one. The team has just four games left in the regular season, two at home and two on the road.
Wildcat head coach Scott Kneifl gave his thoughts on the overall team morale heading into the final home stretch.
“Heading into the last two weekends, I feel like we still have a lot to play for, which is exciting because some teams don’t this time of year,” Kneifl said. “We have done some really good things up to this point, but we have to finish out our conference season the right way and we have some tough opponents coming in, so we have to be focused.”
WSC volleyball is 6-2 at home before this weekend of games. Both loses at home to St. Cloud State and Southwest Minnesota State were in five set thrillers. Coach Kneifl gave out key players to lookout for both home games.
“Our team right now has been fairly balanced,” Kneifl said. “Our middle hitters have been playing very well. They’re coming off a really good weekend, so that’s exciting. We also have Channatee Robles and Brooklyn Kusler, who do some good things for us as well. Molly Romano continues to get better as the season goes on. As a true freshman in our league, it’s not easy to do what she’s done, but she’s made strides, especially defensively, which is exciting.
“Hopefully we’ll be super consistent down the stretch here. We just need to play together as a team and see where it takes us. I really like our chances if we play well. These teams coming here want to play well too.”
The Wildcats round out the home slate this weekend with a pair of NSIC games. On Friday, Nov. 8, the Wildcats will take on the Minnesota State Moorhead Dragons at 6 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 9, they will battle the No. 21 Northern State Wolves at 4 p.m. Both matches will be in Rice Auditorium on the campus of WSC.
