Herman Chiropractic is hosting its annual “Food Fight” from Nov. 1 to 27 as part of Wayne community members collect nonperishable food items for Haven House and the Wayne food pantry.
Each participating business is competing with the others to see who will receive the most donations at their drop off location. The participating businesses include Herman Chiropractic, Magnuson Hopkins Eyecare, State Farm and Family 1st Dental.
Some businesses, like Magnuson Hopkins Eyecare, are offering incentives for those who donate. For each item donated through the eye clinic, a person may enter their name to win a gift basket. To further people’s want to donate, Hopkins is offering 30% off a complete pair of glasses to those who donate five or more items.
This is the fifth year the food drive has been hosted to help those in need, specifically around Thanksgiving.
It is important to donate to food pantries throughout the year, not just around holidays.
“About one in 7 households (13.5 percent) experienced food insecurity, or lack of access to an affordable, nutritious diet,” the Food Research and Action Center reported. “An estimated 47.4 million Americans lived in these households.”
People living in these food insecure households may have a hard time accessing food due to issues with money, so food pantries provide these necessary items to people so they don’t have to worry about the cost of their groceries.
However, people struggling with money are not the only ones who would benefit from food donations. Haven House offers shelter and a support system for those who have experienced domestic violence and sexual assault. People who are experiencing tragedies outside of money insecurity should also not have to worry about where they will be getting their next meals.
The Wayne food pantry is open Tuesday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Anyone who needs assistance is welcome to pick up what they need, and any inquiries are completely confidential. Haven House and their many services are also free to those in need.
Wayne State College students and other members of the Wayne community are encouraged to help lessen food insecurity and donate to the local food fight.
