The “Bump, Set, Speak-Out” volleyball tournament was hosted by Delta Sigma Pi and Student Senate on Saturday, Oct. 19.
Both organizations worked hard to make the event a collaborative effort. Together they planned the tournament, line judged and worked at a water station.
“I think it is a really great way to get people involved over the weekend and to give back to people in the community,” Student Senate President Griffin Ryan said. “The community gives a lot to the college, so I just want to make sure we have a collaborative effort between both the college and community to give back what we can.”
In order to play in the tournament, participants were expected to bring an item from Haven House’s wish list to be donated to Haven House on Oct. 29. Haven house is an organization based in Wayne that provides support to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
“I think that working with Haven House, we are able to start a productive dialogue about looking for red flags amongst people we know and love, looking out for each other, and giving back to the community,” Ryan said.
Student Senate Vice President Luke Polacek said the event was meant to raise awareness about domestic and sexual violence.
“The whole point of this event is to raise awareness towards domestic violence and things of that nature, and I think it is just a good cause to raise awareness of with something as simple as volleyball,” Polacek said.
Delta Sigma Pi and Student Senate felt that it was important to host the event as the groups are often the bridge between students and administration.
“We do represent the student body, and it is important for the student body to see that we are here to support individuals who are going through things like this, especially being in the kind of position where we are in between the students and the administration,” Polacek said. “It is important for students specifically to see that we are talking about this, and we are trying to bring awareness to this and they are not alone in their efforts.”
The tournament was a success and raised various products for Haven House. Student Senate hopes this tournament will bring further opportunities to work with Haven House and raise awareness for domestic violence and sexual assault.
