Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference football is in the final month of the regular season, and several teams are still playing for the right to be the conference’s champion. With no championship game, the regular season winner will get the automatic bid into the NCAA Division II Playoffs.
For WSC coach Logan Masters, doing things right is the biggest thing.
“Every weekend, you never know what’s going to happen,” Masters said. “The scores are kind of crazy sometimes, but it makes for a lot of fun. You just have to stay focused on what you can control and worry about your game in the upcoming week and not around the rest of the league.”
Masters wants his players and coaches to be the best version of themselves. He said he wants to focus on what his team is doing, not the opponent. He wants his team to just keep getting better and make sure they peak at the right time.
After a 30-0 victory over UMary on Oct. 19, Masters says he needs his guys to stay in the moment.
“Shutouts are awesome, but it doesn’t matter this week,” Masters said. “You have to come back and keep getting better. Focus on ourselves…watch film and see what Sioux Falls is going to try to do to attack our tendencies.”
Masters said no matter who the opponent is on the other sideline, he tries to be consistent in his gameplan. On Sunday and Monday the team focuses on first and second down. Tuesday, they work on redzone plays and third down situations. Wednesday, they go through and cut some of the things they don’t like. He mentioned he doesn’t like to change that schedule because it keeps the players and coaches in a routine and allows them to get better.
Masters reiterated that in order to get into the playoffs, his guys need to get better each week than the previous week.
“We just need to focus on us,” Masters said. “That’s all we can control. We can’t control what the opponent does, but we can control what we do and how we prepare. If we do that, we’ve got a pretty talented team so we should have a good chance to win.”
The Wildcats will take on the USF Cougars on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 12 p.m. at Bob Cunningham Field on WSC’s campus. The game is also WSC’s Hall of Fame Game, where the 2024 class will be inducted.
