Kelly Coslet brings her passion and expertise to Wayne State College’s music department as its newest string professor.
Coslet is a professor who teaches lessons for violin, viola, cello and bass while also being the director of the chamber strings ensemble. Next semester she will be teaching the classes strings one and two.
While growing up in school, Coslet never had an extensive knowledge of music and string instruments. She focused on changing that through her enthusiasm within teaching while slowly learning at the same time.
When Coslet was going through school, she said, “Orchestra was not cool.” This led to hardly any string teachers graduating from universities that could replace the older string teachers. As a result, many band teachers were also required to be string teachers.
Coslet’s biggest purpose in her teaching is educating people how to play from scratch the right way. Her attention to detail and constant motivation toward playing string instruments are key to her teachings.
With an extensive background in teaching, Coslet is the best fit for our string and orchestral program at WSC. She has been teaching for 10 years total. Angela Miller-Niles, the associate professor of piano music department chair at WSC, said, “She brings experience from her time teaching in public schools, as well as advanced performance skills on all string instruments.”
Coslet’s favorite part about teaching strings is being able to play bigger string instruments that she wasn’t able to play as a child. This is her first year of teaching at WSC with her double master’s degree in orchestral conducting and double bass performance.
