The Criminal Justice Association (CJA) is hosting the third annual escape room in the CSI house on Oct. 9-11, 16-19 and 21-31.
This year’s theme is based off a Christmas horror film, “Krampus”.
“This year’s escape room is called Escape Krampus,” Wayne State senior Erin Zulkoski, a CJA board member, said. “It’s based off of the movie from 2015 called “Krampus”, which is loosely based off a Germanic folklore of a goat man who would come steal naughty children from their homes and eat them.”
Because of the uniqueness of the theme, the CJA board had craft days to create the needed decorations.
“I love our craft days,” senior CJA president Kiandra Brenden said. “It’s really hard to find creepy Christmas decor, so a lot of the stuff in the escape room we just invent.”
Not only does the CJA board create the decorations, but it also makes the puzzles. It has had many meetings in order to make the concept a reality.
“I love brainstorming and organizing with the board,” Brenden said. “We sit down for hours a week to figure it out and it’s a lot of fun to see everything to go from a thought in somebody’s head to a literal creation that now everyone can understand.”
Escape Krampus is being held in the Criminal Scene Investigation (CSI) house across the street from the Willow Bowl. This house is used throughout the school year to help students get hands-on experience.
“We basically set up model crime scenes and learn hands-on skills that you can’t really learn from a book,” Zulkoski said. “They also use it for family violence class to let us have an example of a home walkthrough.”
The escape room can be booked for groups of 4-6 and costs $10 per person. Proceeds from the escape room go back to the CJA.
“We are a completely self-sufficient, self-funded club,” Zulkoski said. “This is really the main way that we are able to cover the speakers we bring in, the fieldtrips we put on, movie nights and pizza nights. Anything we do, this is how we fund it.”
While fundraising is a focus of the event, one of the alternative goals is just to have fun whether you are a part of the Criminal Justice Association or not.
“We just love getting to put it on for the campus cause it’s something fun we can do with everyone, not just in our club,” Zulkoski said.
