Wayne State College is hosting its annual fall choir concert on Oct. 21, along with special instrumental recitals Oct. 23 and 29.
The choir concert starts at 7 p.m. in the Ley Theatre in Brandenburg on the WSC campus. Admission is free and all students, faculty and visitors are welcome to attend. The concerts will consist of four separate choirs: lyrica, fortis, concert and chamber.
“Come see it.” Karsyn Monk, a member of the lyrica choir, said. “It’s fun to watch all of us do different styles. None of us do the same style of song twice, also each choir does a different style in and of themselves. We’re singing baroque but others are singing Mozart or something like that. We sing all different styles, so you won’t be bored,”
Alongside the annual choir concert, there are a series of faculty recitals. These recitals serve to celebrate the accomplishments of staff in their musical fields.
The first recital will be performed by Karl Kolbeck on the clarinet, accompanied by Shelly Armstring on the piano. Kolbeck is a professor at WSC who specializes in woodwind instruments. He will be performing songs by Johannes Brahms, Alice Mary Smith, Eva Wasserman-Margolis and Adolf Schreiner.
Their performance will be held in the Ley Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 23. This is a free concert open to all. The livestream of this event can be accessed through the WSC website under the events section.
The second faculty recital will be the following week on Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m. Josh Cailkin, director of bands at WSC, will be performing with his tuba. He is an active performer who has been featured across multiple ensembles and performed various solos throughout 2017. This recital will also take place in the Ley Theatre and be livestreamed for those who cannot attend in person.
“We have a young group of singers this year.” Katrina Lombard, a member of the chamber and concerts choirs, said, “They are doing great in this semester’s literature. We are excited to show off our new music and celebrate our fellow music makers.”
