The Alumni and Faculty Exhibit will open with a reception on Oct. 4 at 3:30 p.m., coinciding with Wayne State’s Homecoming celebrations.
Gallery director and associate professor of art history, Andy Haslit, had some insight to share on the new exhibit.
“Carolyn Albracht, Beatriz Rodriguez, Sarah Lemmon, Francine Fox, Mary Haas and Leroy Von Glan have all said they’d be exhibiting,” Haslit said. “I’ve not yet seen most of [their work], but it would likely represent the diverse media and styles of our faculty.”
The art department faculty members all prefer their own personal art mediums, but they have specialties in the classrooms. Of a few of the art department faculty, Professor Fox teaches painting and drawing classes, Professor Rodriguez teaches printmaking and drawing classes and Professor Lemmon teaches design and sculpture classes.
The art department’s students are especially looking forward to their works reflecting what they teach in the school’s studios.
“Seeing what happens when I juxtapose artworks,” Haslit said when asked about his favorite part of putting this exhibit together. “There can be interesting dialogue between pieces.”
Along with seven faculty members showing off their work, there will be pieces from six WSC alumni: Jaycie Germer, Bonnie Mercer, Zoe Nielsen, Mackenzie Oliver, Treva Pinkelman and Hannah Woods.
Of these six alumni, Haslit shared that five of the individuals are his former students. The works of the alumni have been left unknown. There will be a wide variety of pieces and personalities present, and the department looks forward to seeing the exhibit come together.
There is a faculty show as the second exhibit of fall semester every year, with the Alumni and Faculty Art Exhibit occurring on even-numbered years. This exhibit is juried, and Haslit explains that members of the art department select pieces by committee. While he personally has not seen any of the art pieces, he claims that it will make for an interesting show.
