On Sept. 23, the Wayne State College Student Senate voted to add four new freshman Senators.
Seven senators were sworn in, four of whom were freshman. The three non-freshman were Julya Metschke, Michelle Botha and Charlie Kimsey
The freshman inducted were Parker Kesting, Mattie Kucera, Kyley Petersen and Bianca Branco.
“I decided to join Senate because it sounded like a fun and welcoming environment and a wonderful way to get involved and meet new people,” Kucera said.
Kucera was even involved in the student senate at her high school, so she was ready to step into a leadership position at WSC.
Branco was also heavily interested in joining government organizations and getting involved.
“Being a part of something like this makes me feel like I have a voice in what’s going on,” Branco said. “Getting to make sure everyone else’s voices are also heard is something that I want to do.”
Student Senate Vice-President Luke Polacek was pleased with the numerous freshmen added.
“Griffen (Student Senate President) and I met personally with each of these students and can attest to their ambition,” Polacek said. “We are extremely excited and proud of this new group of individuals and look forward to working with them for the coming year.”
The freshman senators’ main responsibilities are to attend full senate meetings, attend committee meetings and listen to their peers.
“At these meetings, the new senators have the opportunity to share ideas that they may have for the campus, problems or issues that may be occurring or any topic that Student Senate could help with,” Polacek said. “Their main responsibility is to serve as a voice for the students they represent.”
Both Branco and Kucera are ready to be involved and step into this role.
“Being a part of this group, I hope to become a better leader and advocate for others,” Kucera said. “I hope to network with others and become more aware of needs that should be fulfilled on campus.”
“I want to help maintain the connection between the community and new and returning students,” Branco said.
Polacek said he believes Student Senate provides an outlet for students to express their views in a way that works towards achievable goals.
The next Student Senate meeting will be held Monday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. in Connell Hall Room 131.
