The WSC food pantry is open for the 2024-2025 school year and is available to all students on and off campus.
At WSC, the student food pantry is in the basement of Morey Hall. The pantry serves to reduce food insecurities and hardships for students in need. The pantry receives food through donations from faculty and staff, alumni and many other places, according to the school website.
Taylor Thorp, a senior, is the food pantry coordinator. Throp organizes the pantry to have everything that is donated out and available for students.
“The food pantry is a good resource for both on and off-campus students,” Throp said. “Currently, we have a lot of canned soups and vegetables with lots of great on-the-go options as well.”
The food pantry is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesdays from 8 to 10 a.m.
“The food pantry is a non-judgmental environment where students can obtain groceries,” Thorp said. “This can be particularly helpful for those who may not have the time or means to shop for food regularly.”
Thorp said she was eager to give back to her campus community and this position allowed her to do that.
“Everyone faces their own challenges, and having a safe space on campus where students can access free food can make a significant difference in their lives,” Thorp said.
Thorp herself is a nutrition major, and believes that this knowledge equips her with the skills needed to address food security issues and support fellow students in a meaningful way.
When a student wants to use the pantry, they just need to bring their student ID, and they will then be able to take what they need.
As this is a free option for students, they are always accepting donations. Food donations may be delivered to the Resident Life office or brought to the pantry during open hours. Monetary donations can be made through the Wayne State Foundation.
The food pantry is run by student volunteers and is always looking for additional help. If a student is looking for service hours or just wants to help, contact the Residence Life Office at 402-357-7318.
