WSC offers a variety of intramural sports and clubs for students to participate in on campus and this year, an archery club will be added.
Brady Shaaf, a senior, had the idea of starting the archery club with one of his friends.
“We were talking about how cool archery is on a retreat together and thought about how fun it would be if Wayne had an archery club,” Shaaf said.
Shaaf and others leading the charge for the club went on a retreat at the end of summer with the Residence Life organization. On the retreat, the group tried archery and really enjoyed the activity. This sparked the interest in making a club team back at school.
Shaaf wants to lead the club with the main priority of having fun and letting members learn this new skill with the help of other students.
The archery club plans to attend between one to four competitions over the semester. At these competitions, each competitor has a bow with they use to shoot an arrow at a target. The goal is to hit the target in the center. Points are scored based on how close the arrow is to the bullseye and the person with the highest score wins.
“Archery might sound a little mysterious if you are not familiar with it, but it is quite straightforward and a lot of fun,” Shaaf said.
Robynne McMaster, a sophomore, is a member of the club. McMaster has enjoyed archery as a recreational activity throughout her life and jumped at the opportunity to compete at club level.
“Brady is one of my fellow resident assistants and is very passionate about the club, which piqued my interest,” McMaster said. “The club’s presence at the club fair really sparked my excitement and eagerness to participate.”
The archery club is going through the process of officially being recognized and being able to compete under the school’s name. From word of mouth and students signing up at the club fair, there are over 100 students interested in joining the club.
“The love for the sport that Brady has makes the club’s growth inevitable,” McMasters said. “I am eager to see other students learn more about archery and broaden their overall skill set.”
