A student executive board (e-board) was recently created just in time for radio students in the Fall 2024 semester.
The focus of this creation is the feedback given by peers surrounding on-air and promotional work on campus. The e-board consists of senior members who have the most knowledge and expertise to pass along.
“I hope that it will make KWSC-FM more autonomous with a critical eye towards the importance of robust student media coverage of local, regional and national events,” Dr. Sean X. Ahern, associate professor of communication arts and advisor for KWSC-FM radio, said.
Though there have been many changes to the radio program throughout the past five years, the e-board brings high promise in developing the station. The e-board is chosen by and coordinates with Ahern.
The executives chosen reflect the experience and dedication of students who have given exceptional time to KWSC-FM. With the development of leadership within the e-board, Ahern hopes the e-board can step in with feedback and guidance when he’s unavailable.
Ahern aims to have at least 75 students on air by 2030, each completing three hours during the week.
“It’s been a bit of a challenge… a good challenge. It’s nice to get to know the freshmen,” Quin Otto, sports director and e-board member of KWSC, said.
Community outreach is a large component of KWSC radio. Station members promote at various locations around campus for events such as World College Radio Day, Homecoming Week and Dead Rockstars hangout.
The station promotes more than just the radio as shown by KWSC’s long-standing relationship with Haven House. KWSC will continue to produce the annual 24-hour stream in the Spring, which raises money for survivors of domestic violence.
KWSC is also creating special programming for World AIDS Day in alignment with WSC hosting the AIDS Quilt.
New technology, such as boards and software, has also contributed to new growth options for the media outlet.
“Our station is going to thrive with the amount of hands-on work students will be doing,” Jasmine Snyder, fourth-year radio member, promotions director and e-board member of KWSC, said. “I foresee collaborations with other media departments forming and creating a strong bond between the fourth-floor departments. I hope with these improvements more incoming students will see a future in media.”
Radio students are currently working to produce work that will allow them to attend the College Broadcasting Inc. Conference. Stay tuned and listen to KWSC 91.9 The Cat on the radio or online at TuneIn to support your college radio!
