After the previous president of Media Club graduated, Blake Bodlak and Anje Oelofse have taken charge of the organization and changed nearly everything about it including the name.
“I had kind of seen how media club had been done and I have always been interested in taking it over,” Bodlak, president of the newly renamed Film Club, said. “Media Club kind of died out. The previous president didn’t really promote it and then he graduated.”
By the end of its life, the Media Club had essentially become made up of just friends of the former president.
“We wanted to make the club more inclusive and promote it more, especially to those who aren’t film majors” Oelofse, the club’s new vice president, said. “We also changed the name, so it’s more focused on film, which Media Club already was, but we wanted that to be clear from the name.”
The only thing that the two decided to keep from the old version of the club was the format of the meetings. A film will be shown that has been picked out by the president and vice-president beforehand, and then they will lead a discussion about the film.
“The movies we picked out for the club were based more on how interesting a discussion we could have and not just if they were our favorite movies,” said Oelofse.
Meetings will be held at 7 p.m. every Tuesday night in the multicultural room, the first taking place on Aug. 27. “Next week we’ll be watching ‘12 Angry Men’. The meetings are open to anyone interested, especially those who aren’t members of the club,” said Bodlak.
The most impactful change that the two have made is promoting the club. They have set up a new Instagram account for the organization where they will be posting film-related content where members will highlight some of their favorite films. The new approach for the club has proven to be beneficial, with over 60 people signing up and expressing interest in the club at the club fair.
“She had a really great pitch line, she just asked people ‘do you like watching movies?’ and nobody says no to that,” Bodlak said. A majority of the people who expressed interest were not film majors, a fact that the two were excited about. “The idea is to give people a space to appreciate film together, and to build a community with others on campus.”
Anyone interested in joining the club can contact them on Instagram at @wscfilmclub, or just walk into a meeting.
