Wayne State College’s radio station, KWSC 91.9 the Cat, will be participating in the College Radio Foundation’s 9th annual Vinylthon starting Saturday, April 20 at 12 a.m.
The College Radio Foundation (CRF), a registered non-profit organization founded in New Jersey, supports radio stations across America. According to their website, “the CRF accelerates the professional development of gifted student broadcasters, inspiring them to reach their exceptional potentials.”
Registration fees for Vinylthon go towards scholarships gifted to broadcasters in hopes of bringing the radio industry to the attention of younger generations. Last year’s Vinylthon featured around 170 participants, and all money raised went to Vinylthon Scholarships.
Currently, eight DJs will be running WSC’s stream this weekend. Quin Otto and Becka Arkfeld, two DJs at KWSC, will be helping with this year’s event.
“It’s actually crazy how fast you lose track of time when spinning vinyls,” Otto said. “It’s a great way to relive what older generations experienced.”
Arkfeld has several DJ hours each week, many of which feature digitized vinyl songs. She said Vinylthon is a chance to revisit all the music she’s ripped throughout the year.
“I’m excited to pick pieces from my large vinyl collection,” Arkfeld said. “It’ll be like being a disc jockey pulling from a time capsule. I just love live vinyl.”
Vinylthon was first established to not only preserve a dying music form, but also to support college students who hope to have a future in radio. College radio stations are one of the last forums that still play music on vinyl, and the founder of College Radio Day Rob Quicke believes this event is important for those who still love the mechanics of spinning vinyl.
A special award is given to stations able to run at least 12 hours of solely vinyl music, but KWSC will not be in the running this year. Several baseball games will interrupt the stream from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
KWSC’s stream can be found on the radio channel 91.9 FM or on the TuneIn app.
