Small town crafter’s shirt printing business thrives

Kambryn Nelson grew up loving crafts and has made her talents known with her t-shirt business, 336 Customs.

Nelson grew up in the country outside of Seward, Nebraska and is currently studying Agricultural Communications at Wayne State College.

“I was always very involved in sports and activities,” Nelson said. “I was always the crafty one of the family, braiding my sister’s hair or painting things.”

This led to Nelson starting her business after she received a Cricut Machine and a heat press for Christmas in 2021.

“The idea behind it was so that I could use it for whatever I wanted, because I love crafting,” Nelson said.

This opened a new door for Nelson, but it wasn’t until 2022, when she found herself making costumes for Halloween.

“We didn’t want to have to buy shirts for our costumes so I decided I would learn how to make them,” Nelson said. “It took me many tries to do it, but I finally figured it out and had fun doing it.”

After experiencing the fun of making shirts for Halloween, Nelson decided to purchase shirts, looked up ideas and got to work. So far Nelson only designs shirts and spends lots of time scrolling Pinterest looking at design ideas. Her shirts can be purchased from her Instagram account “@336customs_” or you can message Nelson to place an order with the design you’d like.

“People tell me what they want,” Nelson said. “Sometimes they tell me exactly what they want, and other times they will give me complete control and I will just play around to come up with some ideas.”

Nelson’s 336 Customs can be found on social media like Instagram and Facebook, as well as in BARE Esthetics, a spa, in Stromsburg, Nebraska.

“A friend of mine, Kenzie Nuttleman, asked me if I wanted to sell my clothes there,” Nelson Said. “I have a rack of many different custom shirts located at the spa.”

Taya Beller, a student at WSC, said she found 336 Customs through Instagram and loves the creativeness behind each t-shirt.

Nelson said her favorite part about owning a business is “seeing people’s ideas come to life.” She is currently finishing up a custom business order of 50 shirts. What started as a side business for a little extra cash has turned into something fun.
