There has been an abundance of wide-eyes and beaming smiles from high school students all around campus recently. The reason is simple, Focus on You Friday!
Every Friday at Wayne State College, high school students look around to hopefully make a final decision regarding their higher education. Tour guides for Wayne State give it their all to show these newcomer students what this Northeast Nebraska campus has to offer.
Current freshman, Noah Grady, shared his experience of a Focus on You Friday tour he received as a senior at David City.
“They showed us all of the big-name buildings like the Rec Center, Student Center, and Resident Halls,” Noah said. “Being a music major at that time, I couldn’t tour Peterson [Fine Arts] because it was under construction.”
If a student that tours Wayne’s campus decides to make it their final decision, they then are invited to New Student Registration (NSR) to take a picture with school mascot Willy the Wildcat after getting their own picture taken for their Cat Card.
The tour guides for the Focus on You Friday tours aren’t faculty like teachers, coaches, and kitchen managers. They’re your own classmates!
Students currently attending Wayne State College, a sophomore or higher, can apply to the college and try to get a tour guide. Tour guides are usually given students interested in the major they themselves are studying. If it is a general campus tour, students that know the campus very well will lead the tours more often than not.
During Focus on You Friday, attending members have the option to sit in on some classes that are tailored to the major they are thinking about committing to. This gives those students a good idea of what they are possibly walking into as a freshman.
Focus on You Friday presents opportunities for tourists to explore Wayne’s campus and what it can offer for students that are on the fence about their post-secondary education journey. Make those future wildcats feel welcome by giving a helpful smile and maybe a high-five to show Wayne is a place of hope, not hate.
