Party safety in a college town

On campus or off campus, party safety is a hot topic. Knowing your surroundings, who to call if you’re in immediate danger and what you’re consuming are just a few safety precautions to take into consideration.

Zoe Lesher, a campus security officer, has a few recommended safety precautions for those who go to parties.

“My major one would be having a designated driver,” Lesher said. “Don’t drink and drive and have someone who has not drank come and get you.” At the scene of a party, Lesher strongly recommends knowing your limits for how much you should be drinking.

“Watch where you put your drink,” Lesher said. “Don’t give it to somebody you don’t know, you don’t know if somebody will put something in it.” Lesher’s final suggestion is to call Wildcat Wheels if you have no other options.

Wildcat Wheels Safe Ride Program provides free safe rides within Wayne city limits to Wayne State College students and their guests. Rides are offered from 10 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Thursday through Saturday during both the spring and fall semesters.

To use Wildcat Wheels, a student first calls 402-375-7590 and provides their name, location to be picked up from, and where they want to be taken. WSC student ID is required and there is a maximum of three students allowed in each cab.

Halle Laursen, a dispatcher for Wildcat Wheels, sends out cabs for whoever calls in and needs a ride. Laursen agrees with Lesher’s recommendations, mentioning that Wildcat Wheels provides a safe option for those who go to parties.

“It gives them an opportunity to get home safely instead of putting themselves in more danger by driving,” Laursen said.

“There’s a lot of people that use it, so more people would drive if they didn’t have that option,” Laursen said. “But knowing that they have that option, and it’s free, more people would take advantage of it.”

Laursen said if Wildcat Wheels wasn’t offered to all students, especially those who like to go to parties, there’s a good chance more accidents would occur in Wayne.
