Focus on You Fridays make coming to college easier

Wayne State College and its commitment to giving incoming freshmen a chance to get acquainted with campus before they begin their first semester inspired Focus on You Fridays.

Focus on You Fridays is a program for high school seniors and their families to learn about the admissions and financial aid processes, visit faculty in their academic area of study and meet current students while experiencing all things Wayne State.

According to WSC Admissions, incoming students get a campus tour as well as a parent/student panel for questions at the end of each FOYF.

To help the new students on these tours, current students work as navigators and answer any questions the new students may have. Abigail Mason, who has worked previously as a transfer ambassador, is in their second semester as a navigator. Mason said each tour has around three to five students per navigator.

There are six tours each semester. The groups are usually separated by major or area of interest and are matched with navigators in corresponding areas. For admissions, there are around 45 navigators, and 60 signups are allowed per FOYF. This Friday will bring 33 new faces on campus, while 43 have signed up for the next FOYF. The full 60 is reached every so often.

Visiting a new environment before you start college can be a huge step in life.

FOYFs are important because they introduce students to what college life will be like, specifically at Wayne State,” Mason said. “They get to see campus and ask questions to both staff members and current college students. They may see this opportunity as less pressure since it is a group tour instead of a one-on-one experience.”

For more information on FOYFs, students and parents can visit the WSC website at www.wsc.edu, or they may reach out to WSC Admissions at [email protected] with any questions they may have.
