KWSC-FM 91.9: The Cat is Wayne State College’s student-led radio station where all listeners can tune in to listen to music and get the latest news around campus.

KWSC advisor Sean Ahern works on deciding what music to play on the school’s radio station.

The radio station is in the Humanities building in room 409 and is either playing music, students working on projects or doing their DJ hours. “We cover all Wayne athletics, run public service announcements and it is a great opportunity for students to learn the ins and outs of the professional side of radio,” said Sean Ahern who is the advisor for the radio station as well as the radio professor. “All DJ hours, all sports coverage, that is all the students.”

Ahern oversees all DJ hours, sports games, trains music directors and helps his students discover their unique DJ styles. “By students’ sophomore and junior years, they can get opportunities outside of the school.” Ahern said, “It takes a lot of guts to find your voice through sound,” Ahern said. The station runs a program called “Democracy Now!” which is an award-winning program that intends to help inform and balance information that goes out to the public.

Do not expect this radio station to have cheap equipment, because two years ago, their software got a significant upgrade to all-new industry standard equipment. The software they use now is the same as IHeartRadio uses which is Zetta and G-Selector. Zetta allows you to control various radio stations from a singular location or multiple. G-Selector is a scheduling system that allows students to put on songs at a specific time and date. Both programs are a staple to the radio department in terms of being a radio station and learning how the professionals do it early on.

The students who run the radio station also have some input about how impactful, important and fun it is to have this radio station. Though some things cannot be put on TV, they almost will certainly be put on the radio, student Quin Otto, said. “Radio helps with ships and planes” Otto said, “radio helps alert storms when the power is out.”
