WSC Drama Cats hosted their second annual Stoplight Dance

The WSC Drama Cats hosted their second annual Stoplight Dance in the Blackbox Theatre which included dancing, raffles, competitions and various activities on Feb. 17 from 7-10 p.m.

Students could choose to wear green, yellow or red to the Stoplight Dance, or the WSC Drama Cats supplied glowsticks in each color, each representing a relationship status, WSC Drama Cats Social Media Manager Anna Mayes said. Those wearing green are single, yellow are in a complicated situation and red are taken.

Throughout the night, about 73 students attended and played various games and competed in competitions.

“To win [some of] the prizes, we did a red-light-green-light game where you had to dance across the way,” Mayes said.

The activities helped separate the dance so you weren’t just on your feet dancing the whole time, Mayes said.

“You could go cool off, get a drink or go to the bathroom, “ Mayes said.

“Prizes included club t-shirts, a $100 gift card to Fiesta Brava and a giant mystery box that was decorated by the drama club,” Mayes said. “It had a bunch of different things ranging from Frozen nail polish to a giant Nerf gun set.”

The dance started last year as a fundraiser.

“We wanted to do some sort of dance that was fun, and different, and that you don’t see a lot of them on campus,” Mayes said. “We wanted to do a dance that was inclusive to everyone on campus, just to come and have fun and hang out.”

In October, the Drama Cats held another fundraiser called the Haunted Trail. The success of that event allows them to waive the admission fee of the dance so more people could attend, Stuhr said.

“We were going off the idea of doing a Sweetheart Dance, something to do in February to kind of kick off the year for us, but we thought that a Sweetheart Dance implied that it was couples only, so we decided stoplight just to make sure that nobody would ever be in a situation where they are uncomfortable about anything,” Stuhr said.

This made it so despite someone’s relationship status, you could still have fun in the “lovey-dovey” season, Stuhr said.

The WSC Drama Cats is not limited to those who are involved with the plays performed on campus, but anyone who has any interest in drama club or just drama in general, Stuhr said.

“The most important thing that you need to know is that you don’t have to be on stage to be in drama club in any capacity,“ Stuhr said. “We want to make an open community for everyone.”
