Law School/Grad School Workshop

Wayne State College hosted a workshop that allowed students who plan on going to law school or graduate school to experience the process of post college education.

Many students want to continue their studies after their time at WSC, but can often be stuck not knowing how to get started. That is why WSC began assembling workshop for students planning on pursuing further academics after graduating from WSC.

“We try to cover pretty much any degree that you might get from Wayne State,” Eric Colvard, assistant professor of history, and one of the orchestrators of the event, said. “You could go to law school, you could go to graduate school for like a history degree or an English degree or any number of things.”

The workshop was also an opportunity for students to better understand the daunting process of application for graduate schools.

“That application process can be a little bit unfamiliar to people because generally speaking, graduate schools are not open enrollment,” Colvard said. “So there are certain things that they’re looking for in their application packets in order to be competitive. It includes a number of essays and personal statements and the kinds of documents that we’re not used to really writing about ourselves, so it kind of helps to have a little bit of guidance in how to go about doing that.”

During the workshop, Colvard added that they also discuss the sources of funding to help with the process of application for these schools, and encouraged students to visit the schools prior to applying, to see if it is one they would be a good fit for.

Multiple speakers came to the event to give advice to the over a dozen students of different areas of study at Wayne State College that attended the workshop.

“It wasn’t just me, there was also Rachel Kunz (assistant professor of criminal justice) who talked about things that are specific to law school, and Tatiana Ballion (assistant professor of psychology and sociology), she came and talked about some things that are specific for psychology,” Colvard said.

The law school and graduate school workshop has been a long running annual event at WSC for over a decade.

“I came here in 2013 and I know they had been doing it for some time before that,” Colvard said. “The event was held on Oct. 12 and will be taking place annually for years to come.”
