Micah’s Closet

This year marked the 10-year anniversary for Micah’s Closet, a small Methodist church-run thrift shop located on Main Street. They had free backpacks, BOGO sales while supplies lasted and a $10 bag sale on the last two weeks of August.

Sue Schroeder, a volunteer at Micah’s Closet, said the store has given away more than $1,000 worth of clothes since January to those who need help.

“Our minister at the time thought it would be nice to give back to the community,” Schroeder said.

Micah’s Closet sells clothes for $1, $2 or $3. There is usually some sort of sale each day of the week. You can buy five shirts for $1 any day and kids’ clothes are often half price.

WSC Sophomore Hailey Walsh said she visits the store from time to time. “I always find something in there,” she said. “My friends have found some really cute clothes, too. We usually go during their $10 bag sale days.”

Schroeder said it takes about two days to swap out seasonal clothes. The local girl scouts troop helps take down clothes from one season and hang up the new donations. There are about eight volunteers that volunteer at Micah’s Closet; they are currently only allowing members of the Methodist church to volunteer. Volunteers and a paid store manager run the store on weekdays.

“Late Friday and Saturday is usually when we’re most busy,” Schroeder said. “It’s kind of hard to find us.” Volunteers love seeing college students visit and find knickknacks.

Clothes are also given away for free to people experiencing hardships. Coupons are handed out at schools and at Haven House. All proceeds go towards local missions in and around Wayne.

The store is located in the backside of the Verizon store and takes donations during their regular store hours. Workers request that donated clothes are in good condition, but clothes not suitable for sale are donated to a local car garage to be used as rags.

Volunteers at the store are hoping to see more visitors and would like to thank donors for keeping the store running.

According to their website, Micah’s Closet is a ministry of the First United Methodist Church of Wayne, a registered 501(c)3. Donations may be tax-deductible and receipts are available upon request. If you are a member of the church and would like to volunteer, you can contact Schroeder for more information.
