Wrestling competed in the NCWA Southwest Conference Championships on February 26th at UT Arlington.

This was the first time competing at Conference since 2020 where the team came in second place behind Schreiner University.

The wrestling team took second this year with a team score of 107 points behind Texas A&M with a team score of 115 points.

Coach Greg Vander Weil is very pleased with how his team preformed.

“The Wayne State College Wrestlers competed extremely well with 13 guys qualifying for the National tournament next week in Allen Texas March 10-12,” Weil said.

Claiming Southwest Conference Titles were freshman Clayton Harris of David City at 157 pounds, Sophomore Dylan Zoucha of Malcolm at 174 pounds and junior Jared Atkeson of O’Neill at 184 pounds.

Conference Runner ups were junior Tyler Kelly of Omaha at 125 pounds, senior Ryan Zoucha of Malcolm at 133 pounds, freshman Lane Barton of Meridian at 149 pounds, junior Matt Thompson of Frisco, Texas at 165 pounds, freshman Isaac Voboril of Milford at 174 pounds, sophomore Corey Dawe of Burwell at 184 pounds and junior Angel Rojo of Schuyler at 285 pounds.

Fourth place finishers were seniors Jordan Jensen of LeMars, Iowa at 157 pounds and Marcos Osorio of West Point at 149 pounds, who received the Wildcard votes.

I think conference went well,” Ryan Zoucha, the team captain, said. “The team performed very well. We had a few upsets and got nearly all of our wrestlers to the national tournament.”

“Right now there’s not a lot to work on,” Ryan Zoucha said. “We’re not going to change anyone’s style overnight. We just need to avoid injury and make sure we finish strong.”

Weil expects “a very strong showing at Nationals with a young team.”

Sophomore Dylan Zoucha said “I’m looking forward to the big crowd and big tournament atmosphere at Nationals,” sophomore Dylan Zoucha said, “been a while since I’ve wrestled at that large of a tournament.”

“A few technique areas to work on, but overall ready to go compete in the Largest College National Tournament, The NCWA event in Allen Texas,” Weil said.

The wrestling team will compete in the NCWA National Championships in Allen, Texas from March 10-12th
