Tutors give tips during finals week

Alexis Tolliver, Tutor of Writing and Spanish gives tips on how to make finals week a success.
Tolliver said college students often times oversee eating three meals a day when preparing for finals week.
“Some ways students can prepare themselves for finals is most importantly, and what college students oftentimes oversee, eating three meals a day and getting 8 hours of sleep at night also staying organized and planning study sessions,” Tolliver said.
“Take advantage of any SAB activities that may be going on it’s a great time to relax, have fun, and hang out with friends,” Tolliver said. “Also watch for the late-night meals that the upper cafeteria will offer if you’re late-night studying or just want to take advantage of the offer.”
Tolliver said fun time is just as crucial for your mental health as is studying and preparing.
“Spread out your studying, take breaks, arrange time for socializing, have fun and just relax,” Tolliver said. “Fun time is just as crucial for your mental health as is studying and preparing.”
Tolliver gives three great tips on how to stay organized during finals week.
“Don’t wait until the last minute to plan and set up tutor sessions in advance, plan study sessions with classes mates,” Tolliver said. “Prepare your book bag with what you need for the next day. Try your best to stick to a schedule, this will help you with delegating homework time and arranging time outside of schoolwork, extracurriculars and clubs.”
“Some places you can go when you need a study break is taking a walk either outside or around the dorm, grab a snack to fuel your brain,” Tolliver said.
Tolliver said you can schedule tutoring sessions with peer tutors at no cost ever through the WSC website at wsc.edu/tutors.
“The Holland Academic Success Center (HASC) can provide services including peer tutoring, academic coaching, and advising individuals needing study tips for classes or assistance on assignments,” Tolliver said. “[Students] can schedule tutoring sessions with the peer tutors at no cost ever through the WSC website at wsc.edu/tutors.”
Paytra TeBrink, a math tutor, gives her tips on how to make finals week a success. TeBrink said a great way to prepare for finals is to reward yourself for working hard. “Meet with a tutor, study with friends, and reward yourself for working hard by giving yourself phone breaks, snack breaks, or online shopping breaks,” TeBrink said.
TeBrink gave some of her best tips and ways to stay organized during finals.
“Write in your planner an hourly period of what tests you will study for and when you will work out and eat, start early with your hardest classes, organize your quizzes, tests and notes all together and throw away unneeded items from the class,” TeBrink said.
Chloe Kirschenmann, Tutor of Education and Praxis gives her tips on how to make finals week a success.
“Some ways to prepare yourself for finals, try to get as close to eight hours of sleep a night as you can,” Kirschenmann said. “Go to bed early and wake up early, eat a filling and health breakfast each day, and attend SI and tutor sessions.”
Kirschenmann recommends students attend tutor sessions and ask any questions they may have to help prepare them for finals week.
“Attend SI sessions if available for your classes and attend tutor sessions and ask any questions you may have, you can even just study with a tutor,” Kirschenmann said.
