Professor Spotlight: Dr. Bobbi Stromer

Sierra Cox, News Writer

New to WSC is Bobbi Stromer, a fresh addition to the Physical Sciences and Mathematics department. Stromer graduated from the University of Connecticut in 2016 with her doctorate in chemistry. After that she worked for the USDA there, she worked on a wastewater treatment system to remove antibiotics from the wastewater. She worked at USDA for two years, shortly after that she went to her next job before taking on teaching. Stromer then worked as a research scientist at the United States Army Corps of Engineers where she did mostly explosive detection work.

Stromer did not originally want to be a teacher in fact, she was inspired by “The show CSI: Las Vegas.”

“I like watching them do the chem stuff to catch the bad guy,” Stromer said. “Originally I wanted to go to school for forensic chemistry work.”

She then went on to explain how she found that the job was not in the cards for her. Fast forward to the present and she lands a job at Wayne State College as an assistant professor, with just a mere six weeks under her belt, she says her favorite part of teaching so far is interacting with people.

Outside of school Stromer likes to start DIY projects, read, and play musical instruments. One of her favorite TV shows is an anime titled, “My Hero Academia.” She also owns three cats: Fat Cat, Chibi, and Luna. Luna is our one-eyed black cat” said Stromer. When telling me about the other stories behind her cat she said Chibi was named after the Japanese slang term that describes something short. Fat Cat is a self-explanatory as it is just a chubby cat.

Stromer is excited to see what this academic year brings; she hopes to be a great contribution to the community of science here in Wayne. Many students that I spoke with said that she has a bright future at Wayne State College and “a knack for teaching”. So, students looking to get into DIY projects, or maybe need a good book recommendation look no further than WSC’s very own Dr. Bobbi Stromer.
