Mask wearing has proven effective on campus
September 29, 2020
As of Monday, there were 105 positive cases, 76 recovered cases and 29 active positive COVID-19 cases at Wayne State College. These updates are being reported each week on the Wayne State College website to help keep the campus and the surrounding community informed and safe.
Ever since Wayne State opted to conduct face-to-face courses, there were many students and professors worried about catching and spreading the virus, largely because many students were coming from out of state.
Most students around campus have taken the necessary steps to protect others by mandating mask wearing when many people are in one area.
“I feel really safe here honestly, I can tell that my fellow classmates and other students are also being really cautious with everything, which makes everything better,” sophomore Kia Burkett said.
All students were given at least two reusable cloth masks and a refillable hand sanitizer container. WSC is trying to take the most proactive steps in an effort to help students and faculty. Professors do have the discretion to not require masks if they can determine that social distancing within the classroom is possible.
In order to limit fear and also keep the campus community informed, WSC decided to send out an information article about what they will require on campus and how the guidelines should be followed to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Anybody who tests positive on campus must isolate for at least 14 days and must be symptom-free for at least 72 hours.
WSC noted that it will work with students who test positive and must isolate for two weeks to get caught up with homework and will make accommodations if students decide to stay on campus and isolate.
Since the beginning of the semester, the Wayne State cheerleading team had to isolate for 14 days either on campus or off campus due to direct exposure to COVID-19.
Even though this can potentially spark fear among students and faculty on campus due to the possibility of coming in contact with a positive case, the team isolated immediately.
