Double trouble for WSC soccer

Despite a double loss on the road, things are starting to heat up for the Wayne State girls soccer team.

WSC fell to 0-5 in league play last weekend, after falling short in each of their away games, but the Wildcat’s held the upper-hand in shots during both matches.

The weekend started with a game against Northern State in South Dakota, where within the first four minutes, the Wolves had a point on the board.

WSC goalkeeper Maggie Harma allowed no other goals in the first half, but the Wolves were back with another quick goal at the start of the second.

Throughout the game, the Wildcats put on the heat with a total of 15 shots on goal, and the pressure paid off when Sophomore defender Valarie Hernandez sunk one in at the 70 minute mark. Freshman forward Veronica Walker claimed the assist.

The Wildcat’s couldn’t settle a come-back and accepted a 2-1 defeat.

The Cat’s brought the heat again on Sunday against MSU Moorhead, firing 29 shots throughout the game.

It was the Dragons, however, who marked the board first.

Wayne State junior Natalie Poppe tied the game with her first goal of the season, succeeding an assist by Kelsea Lambert in the 65th minute.

Not long after, MSU settled the score and claimed the victory in the 73rd minute.

Kelsea Lambert performed a season-high, firing 10 of the 29 WSC game shots.

The Wildcats take to the land of 1,000 lakes this weekend, where they will face Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State on Saturday and Sunday.
