The mystery man

If you have been paying attention to the world of politics recently, you may have heard about President Donald Trump’s personal attorney Michael Cohen’s office and residences being raided as part of the special counsel’s investigation into possible collusion with the Russians. On Tuesday during court proceedings, Cohen’s lawyers asked the judge if they, along with Trump, can go through everything seized to see what can be considered protected under attorney-client privilege.

Cohen is the lawyer who payed $130,000 of his own money to porn star Stormy Daniels to keep her quiet about an affair with Trump. The judge asked Cohen and his attorneys for the names of other clients whose records may have been taken during the raid. Cohen said he had three clients, including the president, and gave up the name of a second client, Elliott Broidy. Broidy is a Republican fundraiser who Cohen helped pay $1.6 million to a Playboy playmate to keep quiet about an affair that left the playmate pregnant.

Cohen’s team of lawyers did everything they could to keep the third client’s name out of the public realm, even going as far as to offer to give the judge the name in a closed envelope, which the judge denied. Finally the name was released to be none other that Fox News’s Sean Hannity.

Sean Hannity is one of Trump’s biggest defenders, and Trump often promotes Hannity’s primetime show to his followers via Twitter. The fact that Hannity did not disclose the fact he shares the same lawyer to his viewers or even to his network is a huge conflict of interest.

Hannity scrambled to respond, stating via his radio show that, “Choen never represented me in any legal matter.” But if this is true why would Cohen claim he was a client under oath in federal court?

Fox News released a statement stating although they are surprised they are still behind Hannity 100 percent. At any other news organization this is a huge ethical violation that at the very least gets that employee suspended. However Fox News, even though it has news in the name, is not a news organization. Hannity himself says he is not a journalist but sometimes says he is an opinion journalist but tells his viewers his show is real news. Just last week, Hannity had Cohen on his show without disclosing their relationship, and said the raid on Cohen was a raid and a disgrace to America.

Hannity’s own Fox News colleagues have gone against the organization and have raised questions as to why the anchor didn’t disclose this earlier. Hannity has a moral obligation as a “journalist” to be transparent and unbiased while promoting his show as “real news.” Although I cannot say I am surprised Hannity would do something like this, I am a little surprised Fox News is standing by him. It can only look bad for them when something comes out against Hannity.
