Eagles vs. Patriots: Super Bowl odds

Staff writer Justin Yost ponders the upcoming Super Bowl game

Well, the week is upon us. The week millions of Americans have been waiting for. Yup, you guessed it, it’s Super Bowl week.

If you told me at the start of the season if the Eagles and the Patriots would be in the Super Bowl, I really don’t know if I would have believed you or not. Both teams were and are good enough to make it, but both teams had question marks. The Patriots more so.

The way the Pats were handled, very easily by the way, by the Kansas City Chiefs in the first game of the season, I thought this would be the year the empire crumbled. The defense has looked outmatched in almost every game so far, but they always seem to find a way to win.

Then everything seemed to be coming down when it was reported that there were backstage problems with owner Robert Kraft, head coach Bill Belichick and star quarterback Tom Brady. These reports were refuted in a joint statement by the three. But, alas, here we are, another Super Bowl and another Patriots team in.

The Eagles, on the other hand, started the season off hotter than anyone. winning 10 of their first 11 games. The only slip-up was against the Chiefs in the second game of the
season. They were the fan favorites to go on to the championship. Then the unthinkable happened. Second-year emerging star QB Carson Wentz went down with a torn ACL in a win against the Los Angeles Rams. Many thought, including myself, that this would be the end
of the Eagles. But former Pro- Bowl QB Nick Foles has stepped in, and played well enough to get them here.

This season has been pretty crazy. Maybe the best example of this is just looking at the final four teams. Two teams (the Vikings and the Eagles) had quarterbacks starting in the divisional championships who were backups to start the season.

The Jaguars, in my opinion, had the best all-around team except one position. The only problem is that one position happened to be QB. I will give it to him, Blake Bortles stepped up and played well at times against the Patriots, but failed to convert and manage the game in the second half. It wasn’t all him, as the Patriots scored two late touchdowns to win the game.

I thought the best game of the final four would be between the Eagles and the Vikings. Two backup QBs, who had both been playing really well, would come in and have a shootout to see who would move on. That did happen. The Eagles took care of business and handled the Vikings easily en route to a 38-7 win.

If Nick Foles can play as well as he did against the Vikings. The Eagles have a real chance to put up a lot of points on the Patriots defense. If they have a lead in the second half the Eagles have to play to win and score more points, not to just keep the lead. We have seen what happens when teams do this against the Patriots.

I really do not know who is going to win this game. My heart says Eagles, but I know better than to bet against the Patriots. Actually, I don’t fly. Eagles fly.
