Intramurals are back in Wayne America, and there are activities offered that will pique all interests. The goal of the Intramural Program is to provide an opportunity for each person at Wayne State to participate in their favorite type of competitive sports or activities.

“I think it’s a good stress reliever and a good way to socially interact without having to step out of your comfort zone while having fun and getting some exercise,” said Allison Baker, WSC intramural
coordinator.

The intramurals department is looking to incorporate prizes for the top teams in the tournaments along with continuing to award T-shirts to the winning teams.

Basketball is one of the more popular sports offered for intramurals; the season began Monday at 6 p.m. in the Wayne State Rec Center. Although the deadline to create a team has already passed, students can join an existing team until Feb. 11 for the women’s league,
and Feb. 14 for men’s.

Last year’s runners up, “G.O.O.D. Buckets,” look to avenge their heartbreaking loss of last season. With new additions to the roster, they go into the season with confidence with hopes of nothing short of a championship.

“There’s not a person in this school that can guard me, and there’s not a team on this planet that can beat us,” said team captain Taylor Reedy. “We had some guys retire and who are battling injuries but we picked up some nice talent we’re looking to display this season.”

Co-ed volleyball begins today at 7 p.m. in the rec center as well. There are more than 20 teams currently registered and you can join one until Feb. 27.

“I’m competitive, so it’s not about having fun to me. I’m here to win,” said Emmalee Scheibe, senior team member of “We spike the punch.”

For students interested in other intramural activities, Wayne State intramurals offers activities such as co-ed soccer, co-ed dodge ball, table tennis and 10 point pitch. The wide variety of options available for students to join not only gives students interested in sports an opportunity, but also gives students who like card games and other activities a chance to be involved.

Intramurals is also hiring at the moment for men and women who are interested in officiating events. So, whether you like sports, games or are interested in being a referee, WSC intramurals has a place for you.

The intramurals office is always open to ideas for new activities that spark interest any ideas can be submitted online or to the Student Activities office directly. For more information regarding intramurals visit www.imleagues.com.
