Wildcat basketball teams have busy weekend

Men went 1-1 against Kearney and women went into overtime to win

The WSC Men’s basketball team went 1-1 over the weekend playing Kearney at home and away. WSC lost the first game 66-71 and won the second game 82-72.

“We played well the entire game compared to when they beat us a couple days ago,” said Brian Goodwin, senior guard. “The first game we played well in just the first half and pretty badly in the second half. The result ended up in a win for them.”

In the first game, WSC led by 10 at the half, but the Lopers had a stronger second half. They scored 43 points, which led to a victory.

Goodwin had 17 points to pace the Wildcats while Trey Lansman scored 29 points and snagged 13 rebounds for the Lopers.

The second affair of the weekend between the two teams ended differently. The second half was much of the same as it saw Wayne leading by five at the end. However this time, WSC was able to finish. The Lopers led 48-47 with 11:13 remaining. The Wildcats scored the next seven points to take the lead for good, leading by as much as 11.

Vance Jannsen scored a game-high 20 points for the Wildcats, while three others reached double figures. Ty Danielson led the Lopers’ scoring charge with 17 points.

The men’s next game is Friday against Barclay College at 7 p.m. in Rice
auditorium.

The Women’s team also played Kearney as well as the University of Colorado Springs, both games away.

“They were a really well-coached team,” said Maggie Lowe, junior guard. “We just couldn’t make shots.”

WSC shot just 33 percent from the field in the 52-59 loss to Kearney on Saturday. The Wildcats led by seven late in the first half but ended up leading by only two at the end. By the end of the third quarter, Kearney led by six and pushed the lead to 12 early in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats made one last run, getting as close as 55-52, but it was not enough as the score ended 52-59.

Paige Ballinger led WSC with 17 points while Alyssa Frauendorfer and Kennedy Sanders both chipped in 17 points for Kearney.

The game against Colorado Spring was an exciting affair as it ended with a win for the ’Cats in overtime with a final score of 69-61. Wayne led by three at the half as the score was close for the entirety of the game. In the fourth quarter, Colorado Springs made four of its first six shots to take a seven-point lead.

WSC scored the next seven points capped off by a big three by Maggie Schulte. Ballinger missed the final shot at the buzzer, sending the game into overtime. Wayne dominated in overtime, allowing only three points and scoring the final nine.

Schulte led the Cats in scoring with 19 and Tatum Tellin paced Colorado Springs with 16.

The women’s next game is their home opener on Thursday hosting Graceland at 7 p.m.
