The Skinny Chronicles: Bottom of the ninth inning

Vito Cole, Columnist

“Jesus is on deck, you don’t want to face him.”

Jack was serious, Justin Turner, Dodger third baseman all red-head Jesus of him, stood on deck with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, as the Cubs were tied 1-1! John Lackey on the mound.

Steph survived cancer once before. They remove your nipple when you have a mastectomy. She told me when they take your breast and give you a new one, you have an option to have a nipple tattooed where the nipple once was. I told her I loved her more than once.

We took a great selfie before we saw Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails together at Red Rocks. I made it my profile picture today.

John Lackey struggled tonight, so did I. He walked the next batter. It seemed like something was on his mind. I guess it’s time to face Jesus.

Steph was diagnosed with an especially aggressive form of cancer. Again. A year ago, maybe. She got a golden ticket to my wedding, but never got to meet my wife or our beautiful daughter we had given life to. Life. Life gets busy.

You want to stop by and say hello, you want to hold her and tell her that the governor is gonna call. Reprieve.

Colorado is a long drive from Nowhere, Nebraska.

Jesus is up to bat now. John Lackey looks tired. Steph fought hard and lost on a split decision this morning. Jack realizes I am not going to talk much tonight, so he provides a running dialogue. It’s Jesus’ turn. Three-run homer.

The Cubs lose and I cry. I go home, I hug my wife, I look over my daughter as she is sleeping, and I miss Steph. I have a home. She moved today. I hope the rent is cheap.
