WSC Student Media will be hosting the 23rd annual Turkey Drop on Nov. 16. This is a major event that the radio station has done over the years. This year, the event is being jointly sponsored by the Wayne Stater, KWSC and Cat Vision 6 at WSC.

“This year the Wayne Stater and Cat Vision 6 will be helping us host to launch our new WSC Student Media page,” said Emmalee Scheibe, general manager of The Cat.

“The event was originally inspired by an episode in a television series called ‘WKRP in Cincinnati,’” said Michael Marek, adviser to the radio station.

The show was a situation comedy filmed in a radio station setting. In a very famous episode of that series, characters on the show did a Thanksgiving promotion in which they threw live turkeys off a helicopter.

“That was an inspiration when 23 years ago, the radio staff here was looking for a special event for the fall,” said Marek.

Organizations and clubs on campus are invited to enter items to be thrown off the fire escape of Neihardt Hall.

“Turkey is a metaphor; we don’t throw real turkeys off,” said Marek. “Our people take it up the fire escape on the southwest corner of Neihardt Hall. One at a time they throw them off onto a big blue tarp with a red bullseye on it below, and there are awards.”

The awards categories are the Best Dressed, Biggest Splat, People’s Choice, Sharpshooter and Longest Hang-time.

“People have thrown off TVs, water balloons of glitter, pies, little turkeys that they make themselves,” said Scheibe.

Anyone interested in entering can contact [email protected] to give contestant information. Entries cannot be environmentally dangerous, or contain any harmful chemicals or glass.

The Turkey Drop will take place on the Thursday before Thanksgiving at 4 p.m. All students are invited to attend and watch.
