Mens soccer gets started

Spring is here and so is Wayne State College’s newest club team. The WSC men’s club soccer team started its inaugural season this past weekend taking on Nebraska Wesleyan University’s varsity squad.

The first half saw a back and forth affair. Neither team was able to see any prolonged possession. Half way through the first half Wesleyan put together its first scoring chance, which it capitalized on.

The Wildcats, however, would not go down without a fight. Just minutes after the Prairie Wolves scored, Omar El Fishawy put the ’Cats on the board to tie the game at one. Wesleyan would get one more.

“I think we played a solid first half,” sophomore Vincent Heldoorn said. “The other team had a tough time breaking us down, and we made some good passes. We scored a goal, which is always a nice thing to do.”

In the second half, Wesleyan took control and enjoyed most of the possession. The Prairie Wolves put together many scoring chances and converted on most of them.

WSC was not able to get anything going in the second half, having only a few chances to score. The final score was 6-1.

“Our first game went well. We need to make some minor changes, but we did a great job of holding them to 2-1 in the first,” club President Sean Petersen said. “Take away a few silly mistakes in the second and add some discipline and we were right there with them.”

WSC continues its season this weekend making, a trip to Fremont to play Midland. On April 9 the ’Cats have a chance to play in front of home fans taking on Northeast Community College.

To wrap up the season, Wayne State travels to Hastings to take on the JV team of the defending NAIA national champions.

“I see us only going up from here. The rest of the season will be good, especially our next two games. Our last game will be the hardest, but I believe if we work on certain things, we have a chance to compete at a high level,” Peterson said.

The soccer team is a club sport and is open to new members. Anyone who would like to join the team or just check it out is encouraged to join the Wayne State College Men’s Soccer Club Facebook page.
