WSC student interns for congressman

Jayme Krejci, a junior at WSC, did an internship with U.S Rep. Adrian Smith for two months this past summer

Krejci is a political science major and serves as chair to the student government committee for Student Senate.

In high school, she served on the congressman’s youth advisory council, which is where Krejci said she learned that many congressmen offer internships to college students.

“I just think it’s a really cool opportunity for students, and I think it’s really cool when people are aware of these opportunities because it’s hard to know these things are out there,” Krejci said.

Krejci just went to Smith’s website and found information about his internship then applied. She went through a long interview and application process before being offered a job at either the Grand Island office or the Washington, D.C., office.

“Initially I was going to go to Washington, D.C., but then I realized I had to work this summer as well so I decided to go to the Grand Island office instead,” Krejci said.

The internship involved administrative duties, such as community correspondence and writing letters on behalf of the congressman. She also attend meetings and wrote summaries of those meeting for the different offices.

“I definitely saw what goes on behind the scenes because I realize it’s not just the congressman in charge. He has a lot of employees beneath him who really do most of his day to day activites,” Krejci said.

The internship helped show Krejci she doesn’t necessarily want to work for a political office, but she did enjoy working with the attorneys from different federal agencies and is thinking about becoming an attorney.

“I definitely want to go to law school and maybe become a caseworker which is what most attorneys do,” Krejci said.

The internship is something that Krejci said she would recommend for other students interested in government, and not just Congressman Smith’s but any Congressman’s internships.
