Track & field camp coming to Wayne

WSC Sports Information

Wayne State College track and field is offering athletes a chance to get a head start on the year and to help develop skills for the upcoming season and beyond. This camp is for athletes in grades 9 – 12 only.

The camp, located at the WSC Rec Center, will focus on the events of: sprints, long jump, triple jump, high jump, shot put, and discus.

The camp will run on Saturday, Feb.18, starting at 9 a.m., with check-in from 8:15 – 8:45 a.m.

Pre-registered athletes are $40 until Feb. 10, then $50 after that, including day of registrations. The registration fee covers the cost of camp, lunch in the WSC Cafeteria, and camp t-shirt.

Sprint, hurdle and jump athletes will spend the first hour learning proper warm-up drills, sprint mechanics and acceleration drills. They will then choose which group they want to attend for the 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. sessions. Following the sessions, the campers will get lunch in the WSC Cafeteria, a short presentation about “What you need to know to become a college athlete,” and conclude with a session in the WSC varsity weight room learning about the basics of weigh training for track athletes.

Throwers will spend the first hour divided into either shot put or discus groups. The second hour will either be an advanced continuation for those that started in either event or covering the basic fundamentals if they were in the other group. The third hour will be an introduction to the hammer/weight throw events. Following that, they will go to the weight room to learn the basics of lifting for throwers. Finally, they will conclude with a short presentation about “What you need to know to become a collegiate athlete” and conclude with lunch in the WSC Cafeteria.

Coaches are also welcome to attend for a small fee. Parents may watch and video their athlete during any of the camp.
