Wildcats end their season in regional tournament

The Wayne State Volleyball team’s season came to an end last Thursday. The ‘Cats fell to Southwest Minnesota State in the NCAA Central Regional. The Wildcats end the season 24-8 record.

During the first set, WSC trailed 16-10. This is when the Wildcats turned the momentum around, eventually winning the first set 25-23.

With WSC leading 19-15 in the second set, SMSU roared back, scoring nine unanswered points. The Mustangs took the second set, 25-20, as well as the momentum into the third.

WSC slowed SMSU down in the beginning of the third, taking a 9-6 ‘Cat lead. That is when the Mustangs scored seven of the next eight points, taking the lead for the remainder of the set. SMSU took the third set, 25-13.

SMSU lead from beginning to end in the fourth and final set. WSC kept it close until late. Within two at 15-13, SMSU scored five of the next six points to put the game just out of reach. The ‘Cats fell in the fourth set, 25-19.

This match was the final time the three Seniors, Alyssa Frauendorfer, Michaela Mestl and Alex Operman, would suit up for WSC’s volleyball team.

During this match, Frauendorfer recorded 12 kills, becoming just the ninth Wildcat to ever surpass the 1,400 career kill mark.
Mestl recorded 22 digs, becoming fourth on the all-time digs list at WSC with 1,894.

Wayne State finished with a 24-8 record, with all eight of those losses coming to NSIC teams. The ‘Cats started the season with nine straight wins. The ‘Cats play in one of the toughest Conferences in Div. II.
